Why does shampoo sting the eyes?
24 September 2022

Kids often have a negative experience with washing their hair once they notice that shampoo can sting their eyes. After that, the hair-washing ritual becomes a drama (yes really). The solution: always choose a mild, non-stinging shampoo. Anyway, first things first: why does shampoo actually sting the eyes?
Chemical foaming agents like SLES Many shampoos contain chemical foaming agents, such as SLS and SLES. These are, basically, cleaning agents. We've gotten used to believing that lots of foam in our hair when we wash it cleans it the best. Unfortunately, these cleaning agents can sometimes clean your hair a little too well, which means they start stripping your scalp of its natural oils. The result: dry hair and a dry scalp. Besides that, these foaming agents also sting the eyes. The new Naïf Kids line contains 0% SLES.
Synthetic preservatives Shampoos often also contain synthetic preservatives - also called parabens - to preserve the product. That's not a bad thing in itself, because without preservatives, bacteria and mould can form. Even so, the same problem arises: parabens can irritate the skin and the eyes. That's why Naïf's products don't contain parabens (read more about our ingredients here).
Have you seen our new Kids Line hair products yet? They don't sting the eyes. And they don't contain all the chemical foaming agents. And, of course, no microplastics. so: "without" as much as possible, but with natural ingredients and an amazing scent. Teach them young!
