Curly hair? Here's how to best look after those locks (without drama)

Curls; people with straight hair want them. But those locks also need good care, and not just in us adults - the kids' curls also need some good nourishment. Otherwise they get all frizzy, as curly hair is generally a bit dryer. Tips for curly hair? Here they come...

  • Comb the curls only with wet hair and conditioner. This can be done in the shower (just stay away from the shower jet). The older your child gets, the more (hormonal) changes occur, which can alter the scalp and hair. So this can also mean that the hair becomes a bit duller. A hair mask (see below!) can help.

  • Curly hair doesn't need to be washed often. After all, you don't want to disturb the natural oils on your scalp with hot water and soap.

  • Do you have a hair wash coming up? Then use a mild shampoo without foaming agents like SLES. Why? Detergents like SLES can be irritating to the skin, causing eye irritation, rashes, hair loss, scalp flakes (similar to dandruff) and allergic reactions. Plus, they cleanse a little too well: in fact, they also strip the skin of its natural oils, something you don't want! The new Naïf kids line contains 0% SLES. Including shampoo - with cottonseed and wheat protein, conditioner (sunflower and linseed oil) and a 2-in-1 variant? All with a delectable lime and blueberry fragrance (chosen by the kids themselves). Washing your hair will be a party!

  • Hair washed or wet? Gently squeeze hair dry (don't rub it!) with a microfibre towel or - yes - a cotton shirt. You probably also have a hydrophilic towel lying around - it lends itself perfectly to the drying ritual too.

  • It is sometimes said that a satin pillowcase helps against knots, tangles and fluff. We tried, and yes, in adults it helps! So with the kiddos it probably works too. The only question is whether your child likes it, but you can always try it.

  • You can use a serum or cream to care for the curls. This will prevent a frizzy head. What also helps is our anti-tangle lotion with cottonseed, without microplastics and other nasties. A good knead and your child's curls will look gorgeous.

  • Final tip: To get the curls back into shape after washing, knead the hair with careful movements. Also known as 'scrunching'.

  • Now for the hair mask: 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 egg. Mix, massage in and let it sit (an hour for kids is enough) resulting in shiny curls.

Fun Fact: Did you know that curly hair can get quite a few hairs in the brush? Don't be alarmed, this is simply because you wash your child's hair a little less often, causing the hairs to pile up. No big deal.
