Perfume
Perfume is used for two reasons: to add a nice scent to a product, or to hide the scent of the raw materials.
There is a lot of discussion about perfume, because they are generally not adapted to sensitive skin. There are two types of perfume: natural (made from essential oils) or synthetic (made in a lab). Both can contain allergens like linalool, limonene and geraniol, which can have an irritating effect on the skin. With synthetic perfume it is also possible to create something without (some or all) allergens*.
Perfumes also often contain ethanol (alcohol or alcohol denat on the ingredient list). Ethanol is used to dissolve all the compounds of the perfume evenly, but it can cause dryness which makes it less suitable for sensitive skin.
Lastly perfumes are often associated with phthalates even though they are hardly used in perfume anymore since there is more awareness on the health risks and stricter EU regulations..
It’s understandable, with all this in mind, why the use of perfume in baby products can be controversial. That’s why we offer perfumed products with a mild perfume suitable for sensitive skin and without the 26 most common allergens, and products without added perfume. This way our products suit all skin types and all parent types!
