Sun protection for beginners: everything you need to know to prevent sun burn

It's time! The sun is coming out more and more. And although we can definitely use some extra vitamin D after those grey winter months, the sun can also be dangerous. UV radiation can cause quite some damage to the skin. Important to protect yourself against it! With these tips from the Dutch Skin Foundation (Huidfonds) you know how to protect yourself against the sun.
UV radiation is the issue. This radiation is the cause of sun burn. There are two different kinds of UV: UVA and UVB. UVA damages the skin on the long term, it can cause the skin to age faster. The tan and risks of sun burn? Those are caused by UVB. What we are trying to say is: if you want to make sure you're well protected, it's important to choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB. But when do you start applying?
UV index
The stronger the sun, the more UV radiation. By keeping an eye on the UV index, for example on an app on your phone, you get an idea of how much protection you need that day. For every index (from 1 to 7) there is an advise, and we would like to share it with you!
Shade, sleeves, sunscreen
Starting at sun power three the advise is all similar: shade, sleeves, sunscreen. But what does this mean?
Shade: look for the shade
Stay out of the direct sun as much as possible, especially between 12 and 3 in the afternoon. That's when the sun is strongest. Look for the shade of a building, trees or sit under an umbrella.
For baby's under one we advise: ALWAYS keep them out of the sun, also in the morning and at the end of the day.
Sleeves: put on some clothes
By wearing protective clothes you can avoid direct contact with the sun. Long pants or a long sleeved t-shirt will do. There is also special UV protective clothing, for when you want to take your protection to the next level. Also make sure to wear a sun hat or cap and sunglasses.
Sunscreen: start applying
It's advised to apply sunscreen to all uncovered skin. Use at least SPF30 or higher. If you use a non-mineral sunscreen you need to make sure to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go into the sun. A mineral sunscreen offers immediate protection! It's advised to re-apply sunscreen ecery two hours and after swimming or intense sweating (after sports for example).
How much sunscreen do you need?
To help you remember how much sunscreen you need the Dutch Skin Foundation recommends "the rule of 7". This means you need 7 tea spoons of sunscreen for your whole body.
1 tea spoon is for your face, including your ears and neck
2 tea spoons are for your chest and back
2 tea spoons are for you shoulders, arms and hands
2 tea spoons are for your legs and feet
It of course depends on the size of your body how much sunscreen you really need, a little kid doesn't need as much as a grown man. But it's a good wat to be sure to know you've used enough and are well protected!
