Struggling with washing hair? Tips for a worry-free hair routine

Not every child is eager to wash their hair. It usually comes with grumbling, resisting, running away or even a shouting match. Although hair washing certainly doesn't have to be done every day (once a week is enough), making your mini's hair routine carefree is quite nice, if we do say so ourselves.

Anyhow, why is washing hair a struggle in the first place? This is (often, not always, but often) because children find water in their eyes a bit scary, but it's even more likely that the shampoo in question stings their eyes. Well, of course you would want to avoid that! Chemical foaming agents can cause this stinging. So it's really better to choose a sting-free shampoo without synthetic foaming agents. The foam is there to make the hair look cleaner, but looks can be deceptive (unfortunately). Besides stinging the eyes, foaming agents also dry out the hair. You definitely don't want that.

So now that you know this is a no-go AND you decide for a shampoo with natural ingredients (obviously), here are more tips for a worry-free hair routine. Coming up:

  • Give your kid time to get used to the water, whether in the bath or shower. Listen carefully when they say the water is "too cold" or "too hot" and adjust the temperature accordingly. Also: get everything ready ahead of time. From towel to pj's.

  • Choose a kids shampoo that is mild to the eyes and does not sting (like ours). To be on the safe side, you can hold a washcloth in front of their eyes, or ... - even more fun! - buy a funky pair of goggles. In time, you'll find that your kid won't need props after a while, but still, they can come in handy in the beginning.

  • Massage the shampoo in very gently, this way your child learns that washing hair can also be very nice.

  • Use a cup for rinsing. The spray from the shower can sometimes feel like a lot; a cup is a little more subtle. Let your kid pick a favorite cup before they shower.

  • Explain to them that the shampoo is a special shampoo especially for their hair. That's cool! So let your mini lather their hair themselves. Also fun: make a song you can sing together while they're lathering up their hair.

  • Create crazy hairstyles! Buy a mirror that can go with you in the bath or shower and see the funniest hairdo's together (hello mohawk).

  • Avoid tangles & knots, because after washing, comes brushing (the second obstacle). You can do this, for example, by using a conditioner or a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. Let it soak in and rinse!

  • Once they're out of the bath, gently pat their hair dry. Do not rub or wring. This prevents damage to the hair and keeps it tangle-free.

  • To complete the hair routine, you can opt for an anti-tangle lotion. Smells good, combs good, is good.
